Chapter Twelve – Organizational Priorities

~~~~~~~~~~
Imagine having lived your entire life following the same course and direction for years, and suddenly realizing that you’ve been on the wrong path all this time!  It often takes a major wake-up call to grab your attention and bring you back to your senses.  Even if you do decide to change course and follow a different path in life, you have to actually make a decision to change course – something many people never get around to doing.  Continuing to follow a path and course in life that’s leading you in the wrong direction, paints a somber acceptance of the fact that you have neither the will nor the strength of character to change direction.  If you know that your health and fitness need improving, your addiction needs to be broken, your relationships are in shambles, and/or your dreams are slipping away – then you need to do the things that will turn your life around and point it in the right direction.
Knowing the direction your heart wants to lead you in and following your heart are two very different matters.  Without knowing what your desire for your life is, it’s nearly impossible to arrive at the destination of your heart’s desires.  In like manner, knowing where you want to go in life and not having the strength of character to make the decisions to get you there, is being unfaithful to yourself – which is the worst of the two situations to be in – because every moment of every day you are keenly aware that you’re going in the wrong direction, with no hope or desire to turn your life around.
Welcome back to Organizational Aerodynamics – the course designed to help you understand the direction your life is taking you, as well as, to help you visualize new perspectives and solutions to the challenges facing you, your family, organization and/or business in life.  The aim here is to help you overcome your challenges and let your world soar to new heights!  In this block of instruction, we’ll look at the concept of understanding your priorities and then designing your life around those priorities, so that you’ll be able to live the life of your dreams without regret!
7. In this block of instruction, we’ll look at the concept of understanding your priorities and then designing your life around those priorities, so that you’ll be able to live the life of your dreams without regret!
The action of setting priorities is like setting a course to follow on a compass, which always reminds you of where you want to go in your life and continuously steers you in that direction.  It’s the process of organizing your life around the course and direction you wish to follow, so that everything you do in your world reinforces your desire to achieve your goal.  Prioritizing your actions to one day arrive at the destination you seek requires a great deal of effort, commitment and hard work to focus and prioritize your actions to achieve your dream – and often more than a little bit of luck, a large dose of serendipity and a miracle or two thrown in for good measure. However, others have done it in the past and still more will successfully achieve their hopes, wishes and dreams well into the future – so why not you?  Why not now?  Why not put forward the hard work and dedication starting today to achieve your dreams?
Even with the best of intentions, it’s hard to maintain a steady and constant course in life towards your dreams.  Like a sailboat or an airplane following a desired route, your dream should have any number of goals strung together like so many stepping stones across a stream. Intermediate goals serve as achievable milestones that keep you on track and allow you to see progress towards your destination.  Even the most experienced skipper or pilot knows that headwinds, crosswinds and ocean currents can throw you off course, and cause you to drift dangerously away from your intended destination and potentially into obstacles along your path – placing your entire journey at risk – which is why you need to stay focused and determined to continuously work towards your goal and stay on track.
Any number of real-life events can derail your goals and divert your course away from your dreams – accidents, illnesses, indebtedness, personal problems, relationship problems, etc. – so your focus has to be kept far out in front of you on the distant horizon, so your momentum will keep moving you forward.  It is much more common to have a dream and not accomplish it, than it is to have a dream and to make it your reality.  Your dreams will never simply fall in your lap, so the only way to realize them is to continually prioritize and focus your life to achieve them.  So how exactly does that work in practical terms?  Well, let’s look at a number of examples.
Let’s say you want to be a writer and live in London – how do you get there from here?  Remember, no dream is too big if you can actually visualize yourself living the dream that you hold inside!  If you can visualize your dream, then there is little to keep you from living it – except a lack of dedication, focus, commitment and will to prioritize your life to achieve it.  First and foremost, to be a writer you have to write every day – when you feel like writing and even when you don’t feel like writing.  That’s what writers do, they write.  Secondly, you should have the education and knowledge that allows you to write the types of literature you desire to write.  Thirdly, you should have lived and loved deeply, and acquired the life experiences you need to add texture and depth to your writing – so your words come from a life that has lived the types of experiences you desire to write.  That doesn’t mean you’re limited to writing only what you know – but to write about love and passion, for example, requires that you have loved deeply and passionately yourself.  Lastly, your writings should be given enough exposure so people know about what you write and are able to give you the feedback you need to keep growing, improving and evolving as a writer.
17. Remember, no dream is too big if you can actually visualize yourself living the dream that you hold inside!
18. If you can visualize your dream, then there is little to keep you from living it – except a lack of dedication, focus, commitment and will to prioritize your life to achieve it…
As for the process of turning your dream of living overseas in a location like London into your reality, there are a number of things you can do to focus the course of your life in that direction.  First and foremost, you need to cultivate friendships and connections to the London area – both personal and professional – and let them know that your dream is to one day move there.  It’s amazing how far family, friends and associates will go to help their family, friends and colleagues achieve their goals in life – because helping others is one of the most gratifying things we can do in life – but they can’t help you if they don’t know your heart’s desires. Your next priority is to learn as much as you can about the city and region of London in order to better understand what it would be like to live and write there – as well as the laws pertaining to your desire to move there some day. The more preparation you are able to do in advance, the more you’ll be ready for your opportunity once it arrives. Opportunities often show up completely out of the blue, so plan and prepare today so you’ll be ready when your ship comes in tomorrow!
You could research employers that hire writers and post them around the world as part of their business, like news and entertainment organizations, travel and tour agencies, talent scouts, publishers, etc. Accepting a position as a writer for a company that will post you in London goes a long way towards achieving your dream – and you can write your novel in your flat during your off-time from work.  Perhaps the time to move to London is when you become an empty-nester and are in a better position to chart a new course for your life – or perhaps, you’ve unexpectedly found yourself starting over in life due to unforeseen circumstances and there’s nothing holding you back from making a major life change at this time in your life.
The point is, if you don’t organize your life around achieving your hopes, wishes and dreams in life, you’ll be no closer to achieving them ten years from now than you are today.   The majority of people don’t achieve their dreams in life because they never put forward the energy, effort and commitment necessary to achieve them.  You only have this one life to live, and it would be a real shame to have dreams in life and not having at least tried to live them.  Oftentimes, we’re not able to achieve our dreams in life, but simply knowing that you put forward your best efforts to live them goes a long way to feeling good about having at least tried – even if you’ve failed.  Not all dreams are realized in life, but many can be achieved as long as you keep steadily working towards them and keep your goal in front of you.
You can apply this same approach to any other circumstance in life: recovering from a health crisis like a heart attack and adopting a new lifestyle of fitness and nutrition, overcoming addiction, rebounding from drowning in debt, rebuilding your life after failed or broken relationships, implementing a makeover or lifestyle change for a fresh and brand-new start, recovering your dignity after having let someone else tell you how to live your life, and/or moving past a crisis in faith after having doubted that God ever wanted to be part of your life.
Every challenge that you face in life can be addressed by designing a course to follow, a game plan of intermediate goals as stepping stones to your desired destination, and then focusing and prioritizing everything you do to achieve your wishes, hopes and desires. Knowing that other people have achieved their dreams without having been born with a silver spoon in their mouth encourages you that you, too, can make your dreams your reality!  Everything’s possible in life and your dreams are simply waiting out there for you to call them your own!  So follow your heart, set a course to your dreams, steer your life in that direction, achieve the milestones along the way, overcome any obstacles you encounter along the way and say a prayer that your life will follow the course of your heart’s desires.  It might just happen that you, too, will one day look back over the course of your life and realize that the hard work, effort and determination have all paid off – and you find yourself living that special dream you always hoped you would be living one day!
