Chapter Eleven – Organizational Perspective

~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome back to Organizational Aerodynamics, everyone!  This is the course that focuses on your unique situation in life to help you visualize your world in brand new ways – to take your life, family, organization and/or business to new heights!  Today’s lesson focuses on perspective – how you see yourself and the world around you.  Perspective is a matter of choice as to how we see the world around us and we often don’t realize that we can choose to change our perspectives to look at life differently.   Small adjustments to your individual perspective can make major changes to how your life integrates into the larger world around you.  Changing your perspective can literally change your world!
1.  Today’s lesson focuses on perspective – how you see yourself and the world around you…
3.  Small adjustments to your individual perspective can make major changes to how your life integrates into the larger world around you…
4.  Changing your perspective can literally change your world!
Many people find themselves locked into singular perspectives that cause them to have a very narrow view of the world around them, comparable to looking through a soda straw towards the outside world. Small and narrow perspectives cause us to have limited insight into the world around us, which then provides us with too few real bits of information to base our decision-making choices on.  For example, let’s say your narrow focus only shows you what’s standing right in front of you, when in fact, an elephant is not only in the same room with you, but ready to tap you on the shoulder with its trunk! You have no idea or understanding about the most important aspect of your life at that very moment – the elephant.
5.  Many people find themselves locked into singular perspectives that cause them to have a very narrow view of the world around them, comparable to looking through a soda straw towards the outside world…
6.  Small and narrow perspectives cause us to have limited insight into the world around us, which then provides us with too few real bits of information to base our decision-making choices on…
Another example that we might use, is the technique of putting blinders onto horses that are part of a team, which prevents them from becoming distracted by extraneous things in their field of view. If a team of horses becomes frightened from something they can see and react to, it can cause a dangerous situation if they gallop wildly out of control while pulling a wagon or stagecoach.  We often see a team of horses racing out of control during the old Westerns on TV or in the movies, because it creates such a dramatic event.  When we go through life wearing blinders, we can be sideswiped by events and situations that we didn’t see coming, or find our lives filled with drama because we can’t see the big picture of the events swirling around us.  Widening our perspectives broadens our horizons and gives us more factual information from which to base the decisions of our lives on.
7.  When we go through life wearing blinders, we can be sideswiped by events and situations that we didn’t see coming, or find our lives filled with drama because we can’t see the big picture of the events swirling around us…
8.  Widening our perspectives broadens our horizons and gives us more factual information from which to base the decisions of our lives on…
Sometimes, we can open our field of view and perspectives too far, causing us to see and focus on every single detail around us to our own detriment, because it gives us a case of information overload. We can actually become paralyzed and unable to act or make decisions, because this overwhelming flood of information overloads our senses.  This can often be the case with young adults, seeking to find their career paths in life – they’re confronted with every profession, opportunity and possibility in trying to chart a future course for their lives.  Instead, they need to scale down their perspectives by focusing on their interests, talents, skills, hobbies, desires, abilities and aptitudes – from which they can then base their initial searches on.  Later on in the process, they can expand their focus as needed once they find themselves pursuing a field of study that interests them based on their initial self-assessments.
9.  Sometimes, we can open our field of view and perspectives too far, causing us to see and focus on every single detail around us to our own detriment, because it gives us a case of information overload…
10.  We can actually become paralyzed and unable to act or make decisions, because this overwhelming flood of information overloads our senses…
11.  Instead, they need to scale down their perspectives by focusing on their interests, talents, skills, hobbies, desires, abilities and aptitudes – from which they can then base their initial searches on…
Our individual perspectives can also set us up for failure, when they’re based on faulty decision making, emotional reactions, mentally distorted views of life, or when an illness causes them to be out of sync with reality.  For example, many people choose to see themselves and their situations through the perspective and role of a victim, where the world is ganging up on them unjustly.  Or perhaps, they’ve found themselves locked into the perspective of a parent, spouse, child or student – unable to see any other perspective that might change their field of view.  Some people may choose to take the concept of perspectives too far, and use them to create multiple scenarios that are tailored to individual people and events, so as to manipulate them and their lives to suit the manipulator’s own interests.  Others may see the world around them through the eyes of an illness, such as depression, and are therefore unable to focus on anything tangible in their lives to give them hope and encouragement.  So, it’s important when we discuss the nature of perspectives, to see the world around us in a healthy, positive and encouraging way, in order to create for our own lives, families, organizations and/or businesses the most beneficial outcomes.
12.  Our individual perspectives can also set us up for failure, when they’re based on faulty decision making, emotional reactions, mentally distorted views of life, or when an illness causes them to be out of sync with reality
13.  So, it’s important when we discuss the nature of perspectives, to see the world around us in a healthy, positive and encouraging way, in order to create for our own lives, families, organizations and/or businesses the most beneficial outcomes…
So how can we broaden our perspectives wide enough to see what’s important in the world around us, yet remain focused enough to not get bogged down in a flood of unnecessary data – all the while keeping a healthy and positive outlook on life?  Finding the proper perspective is simply a matter of: focus, balance, change and understanding.  We need to ‘focus’ on the right areas and details of our lives and the world around us, ‘balance’ our lives within the choices we have available to make, ‘change’ our focus and perspectives as needed based on our desires and the world around us, and ‘understand’ that actions have consequences that require us to adapt to new challenges and situations.  I call this, ‘living your life outside the box’…
The term ‘thinking outside the box’ is often used in brainstorming sessions to come up with new ways of looking at a problem or situation in order to come up with a unique, new solution to it.  The key to using perspective to solve the challenges in your life, and come up with new and unique solutions to overcome them, is to actually live outside the box from the matter of perspective.  Like a lean and agile athlete who’s light on their feet, you need to constantly adjust, change, alter, focus, balance and understand the perspective you use to both see and react to the world around you. It won’t turn you into Superman with X-Ray vision, allowing you to always see the best solutions to your challenges hidden in the world around you – but it will allow you to become the equivalent of an athlete who’s light, agile, able to turn on a dime and react to changes both within yourself and to the world around you.
One of the most powerful uses of perspective is to see your dreams unfolding before you, as if watching them on the big screen.  It’s one thing to see the world around us from new and unique vantage points, but quite another to see our hopes and dreams unfolding before us in the future.  Realize that changing your perspective, whether in the here and now or when looking deep into the future, often requires courage, commitment, determination, effort and focus in order to bring the changes and outcomes envisioned through your new insights to fruition. It’s one thing to see your world through new eyes, but it’s quite another to turn your vision into your reality.
24.  It’s one thing to see your world through new eyes, but it’s quite another to turn your vision into your reality…
For example, someone who’s overweight and out of shape can change their perspective and see a healthy, fit and leaner version of themselves that wants to emerge from within.  They can see the person they want to be in their mind’s eye, but it will take months and perhaps years of exercise, determination and willpower to follow through on their new perspective.  Another example might be a person who finds themselves within an area of conflict and strife, who now sees themselves as a peacemaker – dedicated to bringing people together to find a peaceful and long-lasting solution to the problems around them.  Or, perhaps, someone feels trapped in a career field that’s no longer suitable, rewarding or satisfying to them, and they want to take their life in a new direction and change careers.  The commitment and effort involved in transforming our lives from today’s reality into tomorrow’s dream requires unwavering focus and a burning desire to follow through and make it happen.
It’s one thing to use the concept of perspective to see our lives differently and in ways that others have done before – but it’s quite another to see yourself doing something that no person has ever achieved before.  Unique dreams are given to us for a reason, because we have the ability to first see them, and secondly, believe that they can come true.  There are many examples of famous people in history who have accomplished things that no one else had even thought of before, let alone attempted to achieve.  These are the true pathfinders and visionaries in the history of mankind, and their discoveries, inventions, theories and accomplishments have often opened the door to new worlds of discovery for mankind.
If you wake up one day with a dream to accomplish something, that no one else has ever achieved before – be honored that the dream has found the singular person it was looking for – You.  Your role may not be designed to achieve this dream in your lifetime, for sometimes your purpose is but to lay the dream out for others to later solve instead. Yet, perhaps it is your dream to bring to fruition. In such moments, your perspective is critical to making the decisions that will help make your dream come true.  It’s often said, that if you can see yourself achieving your dream, then you can, in fact, achieve it.  You’re never too young or too old to dream new dreams – dreams don’t care about age, gender, race, social standing, economic standing, culture, religion, nationality or geography.  Dreams come to you because you are chosen to see, understand, shepherd, nurture and realize them.  Don’t let others talk you out of your dreams, yet stay realistic enough to realize that you may not achieve them overnight.  Dedicate yourself to turning your dreams into your reality, along with all the blood, sweat and tears it requires.  Dreams often take a lifetime of work to make them come true, so don’t be disappointed if your dream isn’t accomplished in a few years or decades – especially if it’s never been done before.  Don’t give up short of your goal, for people often realize that they gave up too soon, when the answer was just around the next corner.  Lastly, realize that none of us achieve our dreams without the help of many other people along the way – be humble and gracious, thank and acknowledge those that help you out, and realize that the best dreams in life are those that we can share with the world around us!
